iheartradioClear Channel’s own iPhone app, iHeartRadio, was downloaded more than 1 million times in the first 20 weeks it was made available to the public, the company said Monday.

The iHeartRadio iPhone app offers 150 radio stations sorted by stations in each city, by location, genre, or by personalities (i.e., The Ryan Seacreast or The Elvis Duran Channel). In first 20 weeks, the iHeartRadio iPhone app was downloaded at rate of 50,000 downloads a week reaching to over 1 million total downloads to date. The iPhone app continues to be in the top 100 free apps list and is the #4 free music app.

Clear Channel says the iPhone app attracts 146,000 unique listeners a week, justifying the investment.

“Literally in LA, there are likely 20,000 to 25,000 more listeners between online and cellphones. It’s like adding another radio station…We are growing the audience, and there are more opportunities.” said Evan Harrison, Clear Channel Radio’s EVP and president of the company’s Online Music & Radio unit: “For us, it’s paramount that we make it easy for our listeners to stay connected with our stations, whether it’s at their desk, in their car or while mobile. It’s a natural progression for us.”
